What is reactivity?
-
You're out for a walk, everything's going fine, and then boom, another dog appears and your pup turns into a completely different animal.
Barking, lunging, pulling on the lead, maybe even growling. It feels embarrassing, stressful and honestly a little scary. But here's the thing: you're not alone, and your dog isn't broken.
This is called reactivity, and it's one of the most common things dog owners struggle with.
-
Reactive dogs have really big feelings about certain things in the world, and they're not shy about showing it.
Common triggers include:
Other dogs
Other animals, such as cats, squirrels or birds
Strangers or unfamiliar people
Children or busy, unpredictable environments
Cyclists, joggers, or fast-moving things
Loud noises or traffic
A reactive dog isn't being "bad" or "aggressive." They're usually overwhelmed, anxious, or just genuinely unsure about the world around them. Their big reaction is really just their way of saying "I don't know how to handle this!"
