Restless, Pacing Dogs Who Can’t Settle? Here’s How Better Sleep Can Help
If your dog paces around the house, can’t settle, or irritates you with restless movement, you’re not alone. Just like humans, dogs need proper, restorative sleep. Without it, they can become moody, hyper, or harder to train.
The good news is that there are simple steps you can take to help your dog rest better and feel calmer.
Why sleep matters for your dog:
Keeps their mood balanced and reduces anxiety
Helps them remember training and follow commands
Supports a healthy immune system
Prevents overtired hyperactivity and misbehaviour
Signs your dog might not be sleeping well:
Pacing or wandering.
Trouble settling down after activity
Barking or whining without clear reason
More reactive or irritable during the day
How to help your dog get better sleep:
Create a calm sleeping space
Choose a quiet, comfortable spot away from busy areas of the home. Keep it consistent so they associate it with rest.Stick to a routine
Feed, walk, play, and settle down at the same times each day. Dogs thrive on predictable schedules.Balance exercise and rest
Give them enough physical and mental activity during the day, but avoid overstimulation.Reduce nighttime noise and light
Keep their space dim and peaceful. If outside noises bother them, try white noise or calming background sounds.Give them emotional security
Dogs sleep better when they feel safe. Positive reinforcement training, gentle handling, and affection all help them relax.Let them rest after training
Post-training naps help solidify learning, so don’t push for more play immediately after a session.
When to get help
If your dog consistently sleeps less than 12-14hrs in a 24 hr period (or 18-20 for puppies) or remains restless despite these changes, consult your vet or a professional trainer (Like me!) There may be an underlying health or anxiety issue at play.
Helping your dog sleep better is one of the easiest ways to improve their behaviour, training progress, and overall happiness. A well-rested dog is a calmer, healthier, and more enjoyable companion.
